"Jukebox Attack": Barney's Boogie Train

I just received the new CD by Barney's Boogie Train, aka B.B.T., in the mail and was not quite sure what to expect. It's called "Jukebox Attack" & covers songs by popular artists and bands but they take the songs & play them in a rockabilly style. The selection of musicians covered is completely across the board from Michael Jackson to the Clash to Lynyrd Skynyrd, as well as the Rolling Stones, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Rory Gallagher & even Ian Dury, amongst others!! I actually wondered about why some songs were used because I've never even heard of some of them but it's dedicated to "all the great rock 'n' rollers in the world" not the greatest rock 'n' roll songs so... I guess this is their list of the greatest rock 'n' rollers??

About the music itself, I quite like rockabilly normally and find B.B.T.'s music & vocals to be quite nice and very listenable. The style of music, despite the extensive band selections, isn't all that diverse but they certainly make the songs their own in a way. One way to describe it a bit would be to mention that I was listening with my son and I said, "This so makes me think of Quentin Tarantino" & he replied, "I was just thinking the same exact thing!!" It's, a lot of times, that kind of bluesy rockabilly that Tarantino uses a lot in his movies. I admit that it's a little strange to hear some of these songs in this style and I am still wondering why they would cover the Stray Cats, who are already a rockabilly band, but I think anyone who listens to this will be surprised by how well this concept works out. It's definately rather good & I'm told they're coming to the US next year & I imagine they must be pretty fun live!

So, the conclusion is that this is a rather cool idea for a CD & it's pulled off well. You probably need to like rockabilly/blues to appreciate it, though. But the changes aren't as dramatic as one would expect so there's hope even for the skeptical. Fortunately I already like rockabilly, most of the time, and have listened to "Jukebox Attack" 3 times now & each time it gets better. By the time I've heard it 5 times I'll probably be a full blown addict, so I give it a definate thumbs up!! :) Mikki 5/09
