"Gegenwind": SprottenRock

The new album, "Gegenwind" by SprottenRock is quite a bit different from their last album, "Couch Party", in many ways. For one it's much longer - 19 songs - but it doesn't feel lengthy at all.

Another difference is, naturally, the songs, some of which are VERY different indeed!! Some certainly have what I have come to think of as "the" SprottenRock sound, guitar and vocal-wise but there are others on here that I'd never have recognized as them.

The third difference for me are the lyrics themselves. They seem to deal with the darker side of life even more so than before. They present us with some very dark characters... some we can laugh at because they are quite obviously fictitious (or are they??) and some are a bit more disturbing because they could be the guy next door.

As an example, the first song on the album, "Wenn ich mal allein bin" is about a guy who is a bit different, looks different, seems kind of sad & wants friends to talk to, etc... & when he gets their trust he wants to kill them & eat them!!! That's the FIRST song!!! "Ich Scheisse auf Freundlichkeit" is also a very anti-social song with a great sound, very rocking!! But it deals more with a person who just does mean things to people on a daily basis, which, to me is more common than some freaky cannibal type... Personally, I think I'd prefer the former to the latter... But that's just me ;)

"Monsta" and "Kalter Mond" continue with the horror movie theme begun with the first song. "ZombieHamster" does as well, naturally. This is a sequel, though, to the "Hamster Song" from their last album. Well, you know, killing off an intelligent animal like that will not be without repercussions... In any case, the song is almost the same as the original with some tweaks to the lyrics & music...

I have to also say that the lyrics to "Ausseriridischer" are WAAAAY too funny!!! There's this alien, in his house, doing BAD stuff (REALLY bad stuff) & this guy is worried about his neighbors thinking he's the one who did it!! "Die denken das war ich!" over & over... It's so funny!! I love that song!!!

The whole album is really good, it even had a ballad sort of song that I liked and I HATE ballads or anything slow and boring... But I was ok with this one so it makes it special ;) There was one song though that I'm just not sure I'm all *down* with, lol... I was actually looking forward to hearing "Chicken KillaZ", but, you know... it's in English & then German & has a Jamaican accent sometimes... It's just so... WEIRD!! S'up with that???

But other than that I actually REALLY liked this CD!!! It's kind of weird, at times, but very cool and it rocks!! It has that "SprottenRock" sound that we all know and love (and if you don't know them, you need to!!!) and it's contributed some new elements for us to add to what we used to call the "SprottenRock sound". Just gives us more to love & there can never be too much love right? (Eww, I'm not a hippy, really!!)

I think two songs on their album really sum up what I think they're striving for here... One is "Das Letzte Hemd". I believe that means that they're trying to "push the envelope" to bring people something they don't normally hear. I believe they've succeeded!! The second is "Letz Rock!". "Nuff said!!

By the way, don't turn your CD player off after the last song, there are 3 more things for you to check out!! :)
