"Bastard": Subway to Sally

"Bastard", by the medieval rock band Subway to Sally, is definately more rock than medieval but that's ok! Although it would be quite easy, in fact unavoidable, to compare the sound here to Rammstein, with their heavy guitars, or In Extremo, the comparison would not be quite fair. Subway to Sally definately has a sound all their own, a large, but not exclusive, part of that being the very distinctive vocals of Eric Fish. I do believe that his vocals take some getting used to but they are definately a part of what make Subway to Sally who they are. That said, there are definately some memorable songs on this album including, in my opinion, "Meine Seele Brennt", "Auf Kiel", "Wehe Stunde" and "Tanz auf dem Vulkan" (the music for which was actually written by guest musicians B. Deutung and Milan Polak). A minor complaint of mine is that many of the songs are very similar in style but it works and why mess with something that works? I imagine this album will be very palatable to the masses and probably a very big commercial success for the band. Whether that is good or not depends on one's views but I think I could find time to listen to it a few more times before moving onward. Although I don't have any other StS to compare it to and thus cannot say how older fans may react to this, I think it is very listenable and a good purchase for anyone into medieval rock - with an emphasis on rock!
