Sprengsatz interview: Sprengsatz is quite a cool band & many thanx to them & Posti for taking the time to do this interview!! Especially to Posti for all his translating back & forth to ensure that this whole thing went through, that's awesome!!! So go check out this band's great blend of punk/metal!!! -Mikki 9/05

DML: I understand the band has undergone many line-up changes over the 12 years since you've been together. Could you tell us how this current line-up came into being and how was the band name chosen?

Sprengsatz: Alex and Butze(our singer in that times) were searching for a band name for a very long time. Than they read the word "Sprengsatz" in a headline of a newspaper- and the band name was born.

DML: You've described your music as punk/metal. A good description, I think. What bands would you say have influenced your sound?

Sprengsatz: There are some bands which have influenced oure music style. These bands are: D.R.I; S.O.D.,Ramones, Boskops,Metalbands like Slayer and Entombed, Motörhead, Social Distortion and many more that we forget.

DML: I really liked your "Sagen was Wahr ist" CD but without lyrics to read, I don't really know what you're singing about. I read, however, that your lyrics are a bit radical. In what way would they be considered radical and what ideas do you try to convey through your music?

Sprengsatz: We donīt think that our lyrics are radical. We only express our opinion in a very direct way, for example in the song H.I.V is said that there is a risk to be infected with HIV if your donīt use a condom (so: Better use a condom). Another example is the the song "Die Tür"(the door) It discribes the feeling when the door of prison is closing.

DML: I think it's great that you sing in German! Some bands seem to feel that English is necessary to spread into other countries, while others think there are enough German speakers that English isn't needed. What are your views on this?

Sprengsatz: This is not the reason for us to sing our songs in german. Our reason to write our lyrics in german is that german is our native language and so itīs the best way to express our opinion and feelings. Another reason to sing in german is that we are critising most of the time circumstances in Germany and so itīs reasonable to do this in german. But we donīt refuse to sing in english and so we write some lyrics in english as well.

DML: In your biography it was mentioned that you'd played in some unusual places: a temporary nuclear waste store (whatever that is!!!), a boarding school and a castle.... Could you give us details on how you ended up playing at these odd locations?

Sprengsatz: In Germany are groups who are fighting against nuclear energy and nuclear waste. One invited us to give a concert on a demonstration against nuclear waste. So we played at this demonstration in front of 300 demonstrator and 400(!) policemen. That was a very strange feeling. At the boarding school we played for another reason. Two guys (pupils at that school) went to one of our concerts in berlin and after that they asked if we would like to play at their school. This boarding school isnīt far from Paderborn- so we did it. We were the first rock band that played at this school- because of that it was very funny. The teenagers as well as the educators went totally mad - without alkoholic drinks!

DML: What do you think of the German scene in Paderborn & throughout Germany as well? Have you had fun or has it been a struggle?

Sprengsatz: Normaly the concerts in Paderborn are pretty peaceful. At this concerts metalbands, punkbands and rockbands are playing together. Sometimes there is a bit of trouble, like a fight, but in most cases this is caused by to much alkohol.

DML: What have been your best and worst experiences while playing with Sprengsatz?

Sprengsatz: Our worst experience while playing with "Sprengsatz" took place on a demonstration in front of a prison. Unfortunally there was an accident and a demonstrator died. After that the atmosphere changed to grief. So the concert was cancelled.

Our best experience wasnīt a concert but a radio interview where we introduced our new album. The live interview took place at the moderators home and we were drinking all the alkoholic drinks of his parents. To be honest we donīt remenber anything much of the end of this interview. But the moderators parents said:"We really donīt want to see you again in our house!" (The name of the Internetradio were we made the interview: www.punkrockers-radio.de)

DML: Are you working on something new now?

Sprengsatz: At the moment we are not working on new songs, we have to do same interviews ;-) (and we have to control the translation work... a lot of thanks to Sandra our translator)

DML: What are the band's goals/dreams for the future?

Sprengsatz: There is a big dream of a tour through the USA- and we hope you can help us with that. From next week on we will work on new songs, too. For the best album you will be ever heard ;-) - Posti Cedo Alex Pümpel Knoppek
