 Kind im Magen? interview: Kind im Magen?, aka KIM? is a totally awesome band and I thank Benny Von Schaumschlag so much for this interview!! You guys should DEFINATELY check them out!!! -Mikki 6/06 DML: My first question has to be about the band name. It's very... unusual! Who came up with it and how did you guys decide it was *it*? Benny Von Schaumschlag: It was me who came up with the name. It was a very special night on Christmas Eve 2001. We got drunk, we were young punks and wanted to found a band. So that was it. We weren`t thinking about any consequences. And now we use the short cut KIM? DML: How did you guys get together? Benny Von Schaumschlag: Trip and me met on a NOFX concert in Prag, Czech Republic and noticed that we came from the same area. That was one funny story man. The next day we drove back home together and in the evening we stood in the rehearsal room making loud punkrock songs. The thing is that we all love music. I think that is the way how we got together! DML: You guys have a very professional sound for such a young band! Are you striving then to take over the world? ;) Benny Von Schaumschlag: Thank you! I definetely want to see more of the world than Germany, yes :)! Vom Ritchie, our friend from famous German Rockband Die Toten Hosen did it, too as he went to Australia after making an English album with them. We want to live this out, too. We wanna tour the world. But at first we have to get Germany!! DML: There are several band names listed as influences in your biography but none seem to be German... No German punk for you?
Benny Von Schaumschlag: It`s very difficult to find bands like us in Germany. I really think that we do our own way and I can not compare it to any other German group. So we all love Backyard Babies and Millencolin. But at this moment we do it in German. DML: I noticed a KIM? TV thing as well as some movie thing mentioned on your site. Could you tell us more about what those are? Benny Von Schaumschlag: It`s a lot of fun! We made two videos which were sold out very fast. They are low budget productions. But after making "Stadt Der Winde" our first proffesional music clip, we got mad on staying in front of the camera. We made a little movie that`s called KIM? TV and we wanna do it every two months. The other movie is called "Knallvoll am Main" and it`s me drunken aside of a river with a lot of friends. Man, I´m laughing while I`m writing this because of all the jokes we made there! It`s my first step on the way to Hollywood. DML: Sadly I'm not seeing many lyrics in my CD booklets! Can you give us a general idea of what your songs are about? Benny Von Schaumschlag: No I can`t :)! Every song has it`s own character, it`s own mood and it`s own story. It is the one and only live I live which inspires me to write it all down. We have songs about simply making this strange world better like "Welt Bewegen", we wrote songs about our bad youth like "Wir Gegen Die Welt" and I picked up the drug problem in my hometown on "Ein Schritt Zu Viel". So you see there`s a lot of stuff we have to tell. It will always be. DML: I see that you, Benny, write the lyrics. How do you come up with your ideas and how does the rest of the band come up with the music? Benny Von Schaumschlag: As I said I`m writing about what I see in my daily life. I`m a dreamer but no one realizes that when he`s listening to my lyrics. Trip, my engenious partner in KIM? Writes the musical part and we always come together on our ideas. There`s so much to tell. We are two positively loaded music bombs that explode every day. I definetely want to do english versions of the songs so that you can understand what we`re trying to tell. I hope we`ll have the chance one day. It means the world to us, man!!!! DML: What are your favorite KIM? songs and why? Benny Von Schaumschlag: We love to play "Stadt Der Winde". When I`m sad I love to play a new song called "Was Mir Bleibt". And everybody gets mad on "Dein Leben leben". But it depends on the feelings. We even have some funny songs like "Anruf". It tells us about a boy that is angry about his girlfriend who`s always trying to reach him on his mobile :)!!! DML: I noticed that you have three fanclubs throughout Germany, that's awesome! What, if any, involvement do you have with them and wouldn't it be easier to have one fanclub instead of 3? Benny Von Schaumschlag: Haha :)! No it`s perfect like it is. Because the three fanclubs are in 3 different territories: Berlin, Frankfurt and Düsseldorf. So they can share the areas with bannering, give aways and postering. I really love these girls and boys. I really do! They help us so much. It`s amazing!!! Our fans mean the world to us! DML: I noticed a Copy IS Right thing on one of your CD's... What are your ideas on file sharing? Benny Von Schaumschlag: For a young and upcoming band like us it`s simply perfect. Without file sharing and downloads no one in Italy, Spain or England have had the chance to get our stuff. But I understand that some bigger bands are angry about that. They are real heroes and so we have to treat them. If you really like your band and say that you are a "fan" go and buy the CD!! DML: I'm curious about your views on the German music scene and the punk scene as well. What do you think is cool and what do you think could help to improve it? Benny Von Schaumschlag: It`s diffcult. There are a lot of cool bands but only a few notice that they could be much more famous if they work on it. It`s a hard job but we love it and would never turn away. Most of them don`t realize that they are able to to it! DML: I noticed a new song on your My Space page. Does that mean you're working on a new album? If so, tell us more!! Benny Von Schaumschlag: Yes we are. And I think you are one of the first to know it. We will enter the studio in autumn and record more than 12 new songs. It`s the most personal stuff we ever made, the best songs we ever wrote. There will be an Edgar A. Poe poem on it too. It`s "Eldorado" performed on an acoustic track from KIM?. So you`ll at least understand one song of the new record :) It`s our little baby, I`m so proud! And we will take it with us until it`s big enough and grew old and famous!!! DML: What are your hopes and dreams for the band in the future? Benny Von Schaumschlag: I hope we can tour the world. I hope we are able to do what we want to do. I hope we`ll be a generation`s voice and make the people to think about themselves more intense! I hope we won`t get ill. I hope that stupid people begin to talk about their own problems and do not point their fingers on others. ....and I hope that Rock is saving our planet.
