Dorrn Interview: Dorrn is a very rocking band from Hamburg, Germany. I recently came in contact with them & they were kind enough to answer some questions for us! Many thanx to the Bernd (bass) and Jackie (vocals) for taking the time to do this and everyone should go check them out right now!! -Mikki 10/07

DML: First of all, I want to thank you very much for taking the time to do this interview, that's great!!

Starting from the beginning, how did the idea for Dorrn first come about and how did the four of you come together to make the idea a reality?

Bernd: I played in another band and wasn't satisfied with the whole situation. So I decided to start something new and I found Jackie, our female singer in 2002. After a few changes in the band we finally met Jörn, our guitarist, and Mario (drums) who completed the band in 2005.

DML: How did you decide on the name "Dorrn"? Is it somehow related to the German word "Dorn" for "thorn"?

Bernd: In the beginning our name was dorn. It is the second part of my last Name Bloedorn. But then we heard about another band called Dorn. So we decided to put another "r" in the name. Now we like the name dorrn even more 'cause it's more unique.

DML: How would you describe the sound of Dorrn for those who have never heard you and what other musical artists would you consider as an influence to your musical style?

Bernd: It's always hard to describe your own style. Actually we describe it as a mixture of rock and crossover. We have influences of NuMetal, Alternative and Indie bands though we do not really sound like them - for example Guano Apes, Disturbed, Deftones, Linkin Park, ... to name just a few.

DML: Please enlighten me (I NEED to know) - what is a "Potato-System"?

Bernd: It's a new kind of french fries :-) No – it's a online portal that allows users to download music like on iTunes, Musicload and others. The difference is that if you buy your tracks on Potato you can also sell them there to other users.

DML: I read that every song you've released has a video clip? How many video clips does that add up to and is that also true for your new album, "Oversexed and Underfucked"?

Jackie: Actually we only have two "Music videos": "We're out" and "Mad girl". "We're out" is a bonus track on the "Oversexed and Underfucked" album. "Mad girl" you can say is our brand new video. We just released it online. You can watch it on www.dorrn.de, www.myspace.com/dorrn or www.youtube.com/dorrn. All the other clips are no video clips in the common way. They are just kind of little tiny clips produced by us to be shown via beamer while we are playing our shows.

DML: What are your favorite video clips and favorite songs up until now?

Jackie: Of course we are very proud of the two videos "Mad girl" and "We're out".

DML: I'm also wondering why the "Mad Girl" video has been so long in the making? It was started, I believe, in 2006 and is scheduled for an Oct, 2007, release.

Jackie: We produced them on our own just with the help of some good friends and no company in the back.
Bernd: If you can not pay the guys properly for their work like the shooting you sometimes have to wait for them :-)

DML: Who does what in the song making process and what ideas do you try to convey lyrically and what emotions musically?

Bernd: The "normal" way of a dorrn song is as follows: I produce layouts in my little studio and give them to Jackie. When I start with a layout I can not say how it ends. Often it's a piece of music like a guitar riff or a beat that's in my mind.
Jackie: My lyrics are usually inspired by the rhythm and the music. 99% of my lyrics are autobiographic. I write about all the stuff that goes through my head or touches me in any way. It's always my personal point of view to ordinary themes.

DML: Are you in some way affiliated with Radio4Sound?

Jackie: DJ Ragus of Radio4Sound is a good friend of ours. We met him a year ago at one of our concerts. It's always nice to work with him and he gives us a lot of support.

DML: I know you have won some contests of one type or another. Could you tell us more about those and what the prizes are that one gets from winning such competitions?

Bernd: We are now rich and famous. I for example have 15 cars in my garage :-) No – we didn't get any money but it's a good promotion. In the last three years we didn't join in so many contests but we were rockband of the year in 2004 of the portal nextbigthing.

DML: What have been your best and worst experiences while playing with Dorrn?

Bernd: We had a strange experience last year during the soccer world championship that took place in Germany. We drove to a show on the autobahn and it was so empty on the street 'cause everbody wached the game Germany versus Argentina. Whenever Germany made a goal everybody on the autobahn was using his headlamp flasher.
Jackie: My worst experience was our gig in Chemnitz this year. I was ill and felt really bad.
After 6 songs I had to leave the stage before I collapsed.

DML: If you were given the chance to do one dream concert, what would it be like? Details, please!!

Jackie: In front of 100.000 ecstatic people in the Wembley stadion. Every tv station on the world is presenting it and the crowd is singing along with my lyrics :-) :-)
Bernd: When the show starts dorrn comes down from the sky in black helicopters with the green dorrn logo :-)

DML: What plans do you have for the future of Dorrn? What can fans look forward to?

Jackie: Actually we work on our new album that will be released next year and we are very convinced of the songs we've written so far.

DML: Thank you very much for the interview, is there anything you'd like to add?

Jackie: We would like to thank friends, fans and all the people that supported us so much in the last few month.
