ZOMBIEJOE are a band that stands apart from modern pop-culture - even more, challenges it. Because - looking at a music-scene being everything but provocation - ZOMBIEJOE are different from standard; a ZJ-concert is much more shock-therapy than entertainment. Playing support - (i.e. Marilyn Manson) and clubshows ZJ fascinate as a live-act. The audience actually doesn't get a chance to block the band's intensity during the performance as they share every moment of their ecstasy. "We - just like our audience - should always face the feeling of not knowing what happens next" (ZOMBIEJOE) What remains is the picture of someone who turns his back on controlled, civilized life. Videobackdrops and stylistic stage-clothing support a performance somewhere between androgynie and aggression. Since 1996, when the band members first met, ZOMBIEJOE kept moving between definitions. When soft voices and instrumentals become, within the blink of an eye, desperate roaring anger; the comparison with Faith No More or Queen completes the confusion. On stage the confusion becomes real, when the soft light turns into stroboscope-flashing madness, and a leadsinger; whose uncompromising way of delivery often seems out of control; cowers in the back of the stage just a few seconds after he stood on the PA-boxes high above the audience and screamed for love. That inexorable intimacy connects ZOMBIEJOE with their fans. Longing estrangement from convention and discipline becomes core to their show again and again. "We will not let ourselves or our music be classified by anyone; people doing this are yet part of the machine" (ZJ) Finally you just can't define ZOMBIEJOE. You need to trip with them. -Mikki 1/04 More at: |
