![]() Richard Wagner (1813-1883):Trying to make opera a music of the people rather than the elite, Wagner pioneered the vocal/symphonic "texture", a blend of expressive vocals & orchestral "Reminiscences" to express dramatic & psychological developments. After years of fleeing debt imprisonment, he later enjoyed the enthusiatic patronage of King Ludwig II of Bavaria. His best known works include "The Flying Dutchman" (1843), Tannhaeuser" (1845), "Lohengrin" (1850), "Tristan and Isolde" (1865) & his greatest, the tetralogy, "Der Ring des Nibelungen" (1869-76). -Mikki 11/01
