![]() Subway to Sally:The fine art of melting styles:In 1990 the four core musicians of Bodenski Beat Bodenski, Simon, Ingo and Sugar Ray and their drummer Jörg decided to quit playing good old rock n‘ roll and to rename their band Subway to Sally. Reinforced by that devine violinist Frau Schmitt they set out to conquer the world with only a vague idea of what their music was to sound. It was still a long way from playing folk and folk rock cover versions of Depeche Mode and Beatles to creating their own version of what has been dubbed Medieval Metal. Major stepping stones on this road were the recruitment of Eric the bagpiper, who suddenly found himself singer, and their decision to sing in German. After having successfully overcome the typical hassles of finding the right record company and manager they went off to where they are now. But it was their extensive touring and their tenacity in overcoming hardships which are the foundation of their success. Their present line up was completed in 1997, when drummer T.W. left and was replaced by David. What makes this band so unique and worth listening to are on the one hand this perfect blend of metal and other types of music such as folk, medieval and renaissance tunes as well as the combination of traditional metal instruments with more unusual ones such as bagpipe, violin and Irish whistle. But what sets them apart from other bands of this genre are the extraordinary lyrics of Bodenski. He creates timeless songs whose contents are relevant to present times nonetheless without using words from present times. Furthermore is he able to express themes as love, romance and betrayal without being kitschy - something which is hard to find these days.
