Good/bad, shadow/light, love/hate, faith/superstition... all these are subjects that have always had a mysterious fascination for mankind. These subjects fuel the music and photographs created by Silke Bischoff. Their name is borrowed from one Silke Bischoff, who was shot at the age of 18 during a spectacular hostage crisis in 1988, causing some indignation.

Their 1991 debut, "This Is The New Religion" had also caused a bit of a stir. Faithful to the idea that when it comes to art, you should be able to do what you feel like without constantly thinking if it's "politically’ correct", Silke Bischoff released their subsequent, extremely successful albums ‘The Man With The Wooden Cross’ (1993), ‘To Protect And To Serve’ (1995), and ‘Northern Lights’ (1996). Next to Deine Lakaien, Project Pitchfork, and Wolfsheim, Silke Bischoff had established themselves as a leading innovative power on the independent scene, their major breakthrough only seeming a matter of time.

But things didn’t quite go as expected. Their record company went bust, and internal difficulties with erstwhile founder member Axel Kretschmann threatened to herald the end. It was a very difficult time. No money, no studio of their own, nothing but stress. But one thing was always clear: they wanted to continue writing songs. With many ideas, they refused to cave in. Roman Schönsee, replacing their old keyboardist, was a great help in all this. In the end they're happy that everything went the way it did, otherwise they’d have missed out on many things. Their new album ‘Phoenix From The Flames’, was produced by John Fryer, who has also worked with the likes of Depeche Mode, HIM, & Paradise Lost. So rising like the Phoenix from the burnt ruins of their past they carry on delivering their art to those who will see & hear. -Mikki 12/01
