Equatronic:

Equatronic is a popular German synthpop band that has often been compared to Erasure, but heavily influenced by 80ies new wave bands such as Human League, Boytronic, and Yazoo. The band was founded in 1993 with the original line-up being Oliver Thom on vox, Christian Scherer on keyboards, and Barbara Bay on background vox. Three years later Barbara left the band and was replaced with 13 year old Dorothea Brandt. In 1998 Christian left the band. Currently the band’s line up is still Oliver doing both vox and programming with Dirk Gerlach doing keyboards and vocals too.

The early years of Equatronic says the creation of 2 successful demo tapes. A five track EP release called Shadowland was released in 1996 which got the band noticed by electro-giant record label Zoth Ommog. Under this label, Equatronic released their first full length album, also entitled Shadowland.

In 1998 Equatronic released their second album, Motivation, in which the band began more experimenting with their sound, a blend of poppy tunes with different styles and moods. In 2001 Equatronic released their third album under the MetaWavePop label called Plas:tique.

The newest release from Equatronic was in early 2004 of a “best of” album called Too Close Too Far and Gone / Remixes. This release is mostly a collection of remixes of other electro bands. The band has also recently remixed the song “Shiver” of the band Tristraum. - Nick Diak 04/04
