Darkwood:Darkwood is a neo-folk and ambient neo-classical German band founded by Henryk Vogel. The music of Darkwood is populated by soundscapes with heavy use of acoustic guitars and lyrics sung in both German and English. The first release of Darkwood was the 18 track album In the Fields released in 1999, though encompassing tracks written and recorded from 1997 to 1999. The album is the first part of a trilogy dealing with the struggles of Europe during the 20th century, addressing the pain of war on both sides of the conflict. Heimat & Jugend is Darkwood’s second album released in July 2000. An 11 track release apocalyptic in nature, the CD deals with Henryk Vogel’s reflecting memories about his homeland while traveling abroad. September 2000 saw the release of the 7”, two track vinyl Talons that was limited to 299 copies. A year later, the album Flammende Welt was released and brought a conclusion to the trilogy. The CD is 13 tracks of battlefield-atmosphere music, melancholy but heroic in nature. In March 2003, another vinyl, Weltenwende was released. Two inches bigger than Talons with 8 tracks and slightly less limited (700 made), Weltenwende deals with a variety of emotions, from both positive and negative spectrums. Four months later, a live album called The Final Hour was released. This album isn’t from a single Darkwood show, but a composition of many live gigs presenting a holistic outlook on the output of Darkwood. The newest album from Darkwood was just released in March of 2004 and is entitled Herbstgewölk. Not to deter from previous experiences, Herbstgewölk sticks with acoustic instruments and historical samples, a definite signature of Darkwood’s work. - Nick Diak 08/04 More at:
