Chandeen:

Chandeen is a German dreampop-ethereal band whose name derives from an Indian word meaning “source of life”. The group was founded in 1990 by Oliver Henkel and Harald Löwy. A year later, Chandeen got their first singer, Aline Akbari, who was of Iranian heritage. A year after she joined, Antje Schulz also joined as a singer. With this lineup, Chandeen created nature-inspired electro music and released two demo tapes.

In 1993, Oliver Rösch of Hypernium Records took notice of Chandeen and signed him to his label. Before a contract was signed, Aline left Chandeen and was replaced with Catrin Mallon. This lineup stayed the same for Chandeen’s first two albums, Shaded by the Leaves and Jutland. However personal problems arose in late 1994, causing Catrin and Oliver to leave Chandeen to form their own band, Edera.

In 1995, Stephanie Härich joined Chandeen as singer. Chandeen’s third album, The Waking Dream was released in 1996 followed by extensive touring. By this time Chandeen had gained more notoriety in Germany in the romantic-ethereal music scene.

Chandeen left Hypernium records in 1997 and joined SPV. Their fourth album, Spacerider-Love at First Sight, was released in 1998. Chandeen also made their first music video for their song “Skywalking” which was nominated for the “German Music Video Award” for the “Newcomer of the Year” category.

Harald created his own record label called Kalinkaland Records in 1999, same year which Chandeen did much touring. In 2002 Chandeen released their fifth album, Bikes and Pyramids, which was also the last album to have Stephanie on it. Their last studio album Echos was released in 2003.

Early 2004 saw the end of Chandeen after 14 years of making music. Their last release, Pandora’s Box is more of a “best of” type release with a few unreleased tracks. Currently Antje and Harald are pursuing other projects. - Nick Diak 04/04
